Standards set requirements that need to be complied with, hereby triggering change towards a specific goal
Standards enhance communication about a product, process or organization and hence bring to light some of its invisible aspects
Standards, if verified by an independent third party, as in the case of certifications and a certain number of labels, provide for a reliable guarantee against ‘greenwashing’ claims and alike and warrants a certain quality level.
Standards fill in a void left by missing or insufficient legislation until it possibly takes over.

WHY IS MORE TRANSPARENCY NEEDED?
One of the major issues we are currently facing in the label area is its wealth. There are hundreds, and probably thousands of labels all over the world. Each of them covers a different set of requirements and is governed by a unique process.
Whereas the goal of each label is to provide for a reliable mark highlighting the achievement of a number of sustainability goals, the contrary situation usually happens. In the face of this diversity, people and organizations do not know which ones to trust. This is why specific tools are needed with which one can analyze them and select one or several ones that best covers one’s needs and are in line with one’s values, interests and/or goals.
